Year 6 children from Down Ampney, Siddington and Sherborne C of E Primary Schools had the exceptional opportunity to join approximately 4,500 peers from church schools across the Diocese of Gloucester in attending one of six special services held at the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral. This event was not only a celebration of faith but also an inspirational and moving occasion designed to acknowledge the significant milestone within the lives of our children as they complete their primary education and prepare to embark on their secondary school journey.
Each child received a small olive wood holding cross from the archdeacons, symbolising God’s constant love and guidance as they transition into this new and exciting chapter of their lives. The thoughtfulness of this gesture served to remind the young people of the spiritual support they carry with them, even as they move into new environments.
To support new friendships the children from these schools, enjoyed a delightful picnic and then children from Siddington and Down Ampney went out for an afternoon filled with enjoyable activities. It was also lovely to be joined by Mark Lees, Chair of the Corinium Education Trust’s Trust Board, who was helping at the event.
Each school took their school own banners. These were proudly carried by our children through the Cathedral, which was a heartening sight. Each school also had a child and staff member carrying candles in the candlelight procession where we reflected on the essential role of light in our world. One of our children from Down Ampney was chosen to fulfil the honourable role of reader during the service, which was a source of pride for all of us.
Adding to the memorable experience, the children were thrilled to see their prayers, poems, and photographs displayed on large screens as we entered the Cathedral. This celebration of their creativity offered further encouragement as they look forward to the next stage of their educational journey, fostering an enduring connection to both their faith and community.
